Every recipe is a memory · a simple usage guide
Open your browser and go to the site's address. If you've added the app to your home screen (see section 21), you can just tap its icon.
At the top of the screen there's a search bar, and below it a button showing the category you're currently viewing (for example "🍗 Meat") with a small arrow next to it.
At the top of the home screen there's a row of round bubbles. It's a place to share a moment from the cooking - a photo with a short caption - that disappears on its own after 24 hours. It isn't a recipe: it's never saved to the cookbook, never appears in search, and never counts against your recipe quota.
A bubble with a gold ring means there's something there you haven't seen yet. The ring turns off once you've viewed it.
When today's date matches a recipe added on the same date in a previous year, a small banner appears at the top of the home screen with a reminder of who added it and what it was. Tapping it opens the recipe. You can turn it off in your profile.
Thursday through Saturday a "Shabbat Shalom!" banner appears with candle-lighting and havdalah times and the weekly Torah portion - on the home screen, and also on the entry screen before you sign in.
By default it rotates between a few major Israeli cities. In your profile you can pick a specific country instead, or turn the banner off. Turning it off only affects the home screen; on the entry screen the times are always shown.
A "Get an AI recipe" button appears. Tapping it writes an authentic traditional recipe for whatever you searched for and opens the add-recipe screen with the name, ingredients and steps already filled in - just like after scanning a photo (section 8), ready to edit and save.
This tool counts against your smart-tools quota (section 19).
A button that appears under the search bar on the home screen. It helps you decide what to cook based on what's already in your fridge, instead of searching for recipes one by one.
Above the ingredient list in every recipe there's a row of buttons: Half · Original · 1.5x · 2x · 3x. Tapping any of them instantly recalculates every quantity at once.
Inside every recipe there's a big gold "Cooking mode" button. It opens a clean screen with large text, easy to read from across the kitchen, and the screen won't turn off while you're cooking.
If a step mentions a duration ("40 minutes", "half an hour", "20-25 minutes"), a timer button appears below it. Tapping it starts a countdown that stays visible at the top of the screen as you move through later steps - so you can put something in the oven, keep preparing the rest of the dish, and know exactly when to go back.
You can run several timers at once. When one finishes it beeps, vibrates, and turns red with "Ready!". Tapping it removes it.
If you have a handwritten recipe page, or you'd rather talk than type, the app can read or listen for you and fill in the fields automatically.
The smart tools extract only what is actually in the photo or recording, and try to keep the original wording - they won't fill in ingredients or amounts that were never stated. And if what you sent isn't a recipe at all (a microphone test, random talking, some other photo), you'll get a message saying no recipe was detected - instead of an invented recipe. A use like that isn't counted against your quota, and you can simply try again.
When scanning a written recipe you can photograph or choose up to two photos - for example when the ingredients are on one page and the instructions on the next. After the first photo, tap the + to add the second. Both are sent together and detected as one complete recipe, not two separate ones.
The recording, for its part, is used only to transcribe and fill in the fields - it isn't kept on the server after saving.
Already have a recipe written out in WhatsApp or somewhere else? Below "Smart tools" there's a text box for pasting. Paste the recipe as-is and tap "Split automatically into fields", and the system will place each line under ingredients or instructions based on keywords (quantities, units of measure, preparation verbs).
Unlike scanning and recording, this isn't an AI feature and doesn't count against any quota - it's available to everyone with no limit, including on the regular plan. Detection isn't always accurate, so review the fields before saving.
You can star any recipe you love, both from the list and from inside the recipe itself. Tapping the star ⭐ button next to the search bar shows only the recipes you've starred.
A "Clear all" button at the top of the screen (it appears only when there are items) deletes the whole list at once instead of item by item, with a confirmation first.
When adding or editing a recipe you can add free-form tags like "quick" or "for the holiday". They help you find a recipe in search. At the bottom of every recipe there's also a place to write a note, for example "I changed it slightly and it came out great". The whole family will see it.
Inside every recipe there's a "Share" button that opens a small menu with two very different options - it's worth knowing the difference between them.
This is different: not a one-time viewing link, but a personal share with someone who already has a Momasort account - a friend, say, or a relative in a different family.
Your profile also has "Ongoing sharing": instead of sharing one recipe at a time, you set it up so all recipes - of the whole family, or just one person - are always available to someone else, including recipes added in the future.
This also requires approval from the other side, and can be canceled any time. The same screen lists every individual recipe you've shared, with an option to remove each one.
Personal sharing (single or ongoing) is limited to 2 different recipients on the free plan and 10 with a subscription. The limit does not apply to a viewing link - that's always unlimited.
If your plan drops (a subscription expires, say) and you have more recipients than allowed, no share is deleted - some are just temporarily frozen, and you choose manually who stays active on the "📨 Ongoing sharing" screen.
Tap the tree icon 🌳 in the header to see everyone in the family.
If both parents are marked for the same child, they'll be shown together as a couple at the top, with their shared children below them.
The invite lives inside the family tree screen, under "Invite a family member", and there are two ways to do it - depending on whether the person already has an account.
If they don't have an account yet: the "🔗 Send invite link" button, and they join in one tap (the family name is already included in the message). Below it are the family code and the family name, each with a copy button, if you'd rather send them manually. Joining requires both - a security layer, so a code that leaked in a forwarded screenshot isn't enough on its own.
If they already have an account: enter their username and they'll get a request to approve. Since you can only be in one family, approving moves them over to you - and they choose which of their recipes to bring along.
There's a bell in the header, with a small red number when you have unread notifications. Tap it to see what's new. You get a notification when:
Tapping a notification takes you to the thing itself - the recipe, the shared book, or the plans screen, depending on the notification type. The bell resets the moment you open it.
Tap your round profile picture at the top of the header (or the name and logo) to open your profile.
There are three quick buttons at the top of the screen: ⭐ My plan (section 20), 📲 Shared with me, and 📨 Ongoing sharing (section 13).
The "A cookbook to print and share" button leads to the cookbook (section 16) - a nicely formatted file you can print, save as a PDF, or send to someone. That's how you take a copy of your recipes with you.
Deleted a recipe by mistake? Your profile has a "Deleted recipes" button that shows everything deleted in the last 30 days, with one-tap restore. After 30 days the recipe is permanently deleted.
A section with personal switches (they affect only you, not the rest of the family) to turn off "Shabbat times" and the "On this day, in previous years" banner. While Shabbat times are on you can also pick a specific country instead of the default rotation. Changes are saved with the regular "Save" button.
Three buttons - ☀️ Light, 🌙 Dark, ⚙️ Automatic (follows your device's own setting). Dark mode is easier on the eyes for cooking in the evening or in a dimly lit kitchen.
Unlike "App color", this setting is open to everyone regardless of plan, and is saved on this device only - each device you log in from picks its own.
At the bottom of your profile there's also a "Delete account" option - permanently deletes your user, with a choice to also delete the recipes you added or leave them for the rest of the family. If you're the only member, this deletes the whole family. It requires your password and can't be undone.
At the bottom of the screen there's also a link back to this guide, and a "Have feedback or a problem" button that opens a ready-made WhatsApp message.
A group that isn't family - coworkers, cousins, a sports team - want a shared recipe book together, without their recipes "mixing in" with your family cookbook (or the other way around)? That's exactly what shared books are for.
The key idea: a recipe you see inside a shared book doesn't automatically enter your own personal recipe book. It stays "view only" until someone explicitly taps "Copy to my book". That way you can be a member of several shared books at once, without any of them affecting your family's search, categories, or printable cookbook.
Copying a recipe from a shared book into your own book counts against your regular recipe quota (150 on the free plan, section 20), exactly like adding a new recipe. Viewing a shared book is never limited.
On the free plan you can open one shared book, and paid plans get up to 10. There's no limit at all on joining books other people opened - you can be a member of as many as you like.
Do you have a whole history of recipes in a family WhatsApp group, or a stack of scanned recipe page photos? You can import everything at once instead of copying each recipe separately. It's the same button for both cases - the app detects on its own what it received.
Compress up to 500 recipe page photos (scanned or photographed) into a single ZIP file, and upload it via the same button. The server processes them in batches in the background - you can follow the progress on screen. If you accidentally leave in the middle, the server keeps processing more slowly, and you can come back and see the finished results.
In both cases, before the recipes are actually added you'll see a review list: you can mark what to include and fix the name or category there.
Every family member gets one free use of each smart tool separately: one photo scan, one voice transcription, and one "Get an AI recipe". That way you can try each tool on its own instead of spending every trial on the same one. Once you've used a particular tool, only that one is grayed out - the rest stay available.
Bulk import (section 18) is available only on paid plans, with no free trial. Pasting an existing recipe with automatic splitting (section 8) doesn't count here at all - it isn't an AI tool, and it's available with no limit to everyone.
The allowance you buy belongs to you, not automatically to the whole family. On the "⭐ My plan" screen there's a simple toggle:
When several family members share, the allowances add up: a monthly subscription (100 a month) alongside a one-time plan (500), both sharing, gives the family 600 in practice. You can change your choice whenever you like.
Recipe storage (one person buying a plan gives the entire family its storage allowance), the app colour choice, the sharing-recipient allowance, and shared books.
These unlock for everyone even if the plan holder chose "Private" - that choice governs who you share AI credits with, not which capabilities the family cookbook unlocked.
The rest of the app (search, the shopping list, the family tree, the printable cookbook, sharing with other users, and more) is available to everyone with no limit, even on the regular (free) plan.
A deleted recipe waits in the "Deleted recipes" archive for up to 30 days (section 15) and doesn't count toward the limit, so deleting one frees up room immediately.
Note: if you delete a recipe to free up room and add a new one in its place, that slot is taken again - restoring the old recipe from the archive will show a "cookbook full" message. The recipe isn't lost; it keeps waiting in the archive until you free up room or upgrade.
This tool (section 2) has its own free use on the regular plan, separate from scanning and recording.
If you have paid credits - your own, or from someone who chose to share - it has its own gentle limit: up to 3 recipes a day per family member, completely separate from your regular smart-tools quota (which stays fully available for scanning, recording and bulk import). The limit is personal and resets automatically every day.
Tap "⭐ My plan" in your profile (section 15) to see all the options and choose.
Anyone on the one-time plan who has used up their 500-recipe quota can add 500 more recipes to their existing quota (not a new plan, just an add-on) - available directly on the "⭐ My plan" screen.
The screen clearly shows which plan you're currently on (including if you're still on the regular/free plan), and an expiration date if there is one. There's also a usage meter there - how much of your current plan's allowance has been used (free AI attempts, the monthly smart-tools/WhatsApp quota, or the cumulative recipe quota on the one-time plan), shown as a percentage.
🎨 Choosing an app color: once anyone in the family has bought a subscription or the one-time plan, every family member can choose a color for the app (red/orange/yellow/green/blue) in their profile - and the choice is personal to each person: different family members can each have a different color. The free plan keeps the default color (gold).
If your one-time recipe quota has run out, or you have frozen shares (section 13), a message will appear on the home page that you can dismiss, with a direct link to resolve it.
A separate page with full details on the differences between plans →
This makes the app open like any other app, with no browser address bar:
On most Android phones the default browser is Chrome. If you're not sure which browser is open, check the name at the top of the page itself.
No problem - your profile (section 15) has "Deleted recipes". For up to 30 days after deletion you can restore the recipe yourself with one tap. After 30 days it's permanently deleted from the app (if you need help after that time has passed, you can still reach out to us - it may still be possible to help).
Check that you're in the right category, or search for the name in the search bar.
Sharing (single or ongoing) isn't active automatically - the other side has to approve it first under their "Shared with me". Until they approve it, it just shows up for them as a pending request.
On the sign-in screen tap "Forgot password", enter your email, and you'll get a link to choose a new password. (You need a valid, verified email in your profile for this - section 15.)
It only appears when there's a recipe that was added on that exact date (day and month) in a previous year. If there's no match today, you simply won't see it - that's not a bug.
Try refreshing the page (pull down, or close and reopen). If it continues, reach out via "Contact us".
The free plan holds up to 150 active recipes. The cap only blocks adding a new recipe - if you already have more (say, after a subscription expired), all your recipes stay visible, editable, shareable and printable as usual. You can free up room, or upgrade your plan (section 20).
Every family member gets one free use of each tool separately: one photo scan, one voice recording, and one "Get an AI recipe" - so you can get a feel for each on its own. After that you can upgrade to a paid plan, or buy a small credit pack with no subscription (section 20).
Nothing gets deleted. Your subscription stays active until the regular renewal date, and only then does the family move automatically to the free plan. All your recipes, even if you have more than 150, stay visible, editable and shareable as usual - only adding new recipes gets blocked if you're over the free cap.
For viewing - yes. After you've opened it once with a connection, the app keeps a copy of your recipes on the device, so you can open and read them even with no network (or a weak one). Adding and editing recipes require an internet connection.
Yes. The subscription belongs to the whole family, tied to the family code - not to an individual user. As soon as anyone in the family upgrades the plan, everyone who signs in with the same family code gets the same benefits immediately, with nothing to pay separately. Worth knowing: the quotas (like the recipe count or the smart-tools usage count) are shared across the whole household too - they aren't counted separately per person.
There's no limit at all on the number of family members - join as many as you want to the same family code, on any plan, including the free one. The numbers 2 (free) / 10 (subscription or one-time) in section 20 refer to something completely different: how many people outside the family you can share recipes with via "Share with a user" (section 13). It has nothing to do with the number of family members themselves.
Yes - there's a language switch button on the sign-in screen (before you actually log in) that moves the whole app to English, including layout direction. Make sure to pick the language you want on that screen - the choice is saved on your device, so next time you open the app it'll start right in the language you picked.
First check your spam/promotions folder. If it's not there either, make sure the email on your profile (section 15) is correct, and try requesting it again. If that still doesn't help, reach out via "Contact us" and we'll help manually.
Your profile (section 15) has a "Delete my account" button at the bottom of the page, which requires your password to confirm - this action can't be undone. If there are other family members under your family code, only your personal profile is deleted, and you can choose whether the recipes you added stay with the family or get deleted along with you. If you're the only member of the family, the deletion removes the whole family - all recipes, photos and data - permanently.
